‘A true gem. It deserves to be the standard reference book for any pastor seeking to use the Westminster Standards in his ministry. It should be the first volume for which any Sunday School teacher reaches when asked to do a class on the Confession. It should be the constant companion of all elders…Enjoy , and learn.’ — CARL TRUEMAN

‘Dr. Van Dixhoorn is a pastor-professor in the Presbyterian and Reformed tradition who knows and appreciates the theology of the Assembly and of its writings. It is therefore something to be welcomed and celebrated that he has produced a commentary on the Westminster Confession of Faith. To all who are interested in understanding the Confession’s theology better, I commend this book enthusiastically.’ — LIGON DUNCAN

‘The author is an acknowledged expert on the history and development of the Westminster Confession. The main strength of the commentary, however, lies in the sure way Dr Van Dixhoorn unpacks the teaching of the Confession in the light of God’s word and applies it with pastoral wisdom to the life of believers today. ‘Tolle lege’, pick up, read and sink the roots of your life into the rich soil of biblical truth.’ — IAN HAMILTON

‘Professor Van Dixhoorn has provided us not only with the text of the Confession, but casts fresh light on the historical context as well as the relevance of each doctrine for our faith and life today. It is a privilege to be able to read this book and even a greater one to commend it heartily.’ — MICHAEL HORTON

‘Dr Van Dixhoorn’s research on the Westminster Assembly is seminal, setting the agenda for a long time to come. It is gratifying that some of the fruits of his work are now available to a wider readership. This book will be of immense value as he explains the Confession clearly, from an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Assembly’s debates set in its historical context.’ — ROBERT LETHAM

‘I like Confessing the Faith – particularly enjoyed it as I read it through myself – but I use it as a regular resource with my men’s leadership training at the church for discipleship. It’s my go-to book for instruction and doctrinal training in the church. First, it covers the system of doctrine taught in the Westminster Standards, so it’s a comprehensive statement of the Christian faith. Second, it’s compelling in its arrangement, particularly in its use of scripture. Third, everyone who I’ve given the book to says, “this is the most straightforward reading” – not the simplest reading in terms of “not profound”, but it’s “like meat falling off the bone”. Easy to read, easy to understand, easy to be taught. Sometimes I say “all I have to do is give it to the men; I hardly have to teach it at all.” Really appreciate this book.’ — PETER VAN DOODEWAARD

Book Description

In Confessing the Faith, Chad Van Dixhoorn offers a fresh look at a classic statement of the Reformed faith. The Westminster Confession of Faith finds itself in the first rank of great Christian creeds. Presbyterian and Reformed churches employ its doctrine for instruction; others acknowledge few texts to be so useful in the Christian’s quest to glorify and enjoy God.

This accessible, biblical, and thoughtful work digests years of study and teaching into bite-sized sections. Van Dixhoorn’s Confessing the Faith is historical and practical in its focus. It deliberately presents readers with more than another survey of Reformed theology; it offers a guide to a particular text, considers its original proof-texts, and seeks to deepen our understanding of each paragraph of the Confession.

Challenging hearts and minds, Confessing the Faith hopes to edify and instruct both advanced and general audiences, as the authors of the Confession of Faith surely hoped their magnum opus would do.

I believe nothing essential about divine truth is omitted in the WCF. I am an ex Roman catholic and a convert to the Reformed faith, and I am now a Presbyterian. For me, Confessing the Faith: A Guide to the Westminster Confession of Faith allowed me to obtain what we Reformed protestants believe, and I think it is a clear and systematic conception of sacred truth, both as a whole, and with all its parts so arranged as to display their relative importance, and their mutual bearing upon, and illustration of, each other. I use the WCF as my main source and guide as a Presbyterian. I think the WCF fortifies the mind against the danger of being led astray by crude notions, as Roman Catholicism has which or induced to attribute undue importance to some doctrine, to the disparagement of others not less essential, and with serious injury to the harmonious analogy of faith. I highly recommend Confessing the Faith.
