Book Description

Over the past fifty years there has been a great resurgence of interest in the writings of the Puritans. The reading of their works has brought great benefit to the people of God in many lands. Christians from many different backgrounds and cultures owe a great debt of gratitude to those faithful pastors and preachers who continue to speak through their writings even though they have long since entered into their heavenly reward. The Puritans really knew how to teach and apply God’s Word in the Spirit’s power!

Richard Rushing has compiled this book of daily devotional readings from his favorite Puritan authors because of the great help he has gained from their Works. ‘How thrilling it has been for me to read the Puritans on the glory and attributes of God, divine providence, fellowship with God, holiness of life and the mortification of indwelling sin, heavenly mindedness, prayer, evangelistic zeal, and trust in the Lord during times of affliction. At every turn these truths are eloquently taught, faithfully applied, and kindly offered as the subject of sweet spiritual meditation.’

This book is sent forth with the prayer that it will open a door to the vast stores of treasure to be found in the writings of the Puritans and that it will stimulate further exploration of this rich spiritual inheritance.

“Voices from the Past” has been daily reading in my home for the past few years. It is a phenomenal compilation of beautiful summaries of Puritan devotional literature. Richard Rushing has done an amazing work by taking several pages of sometimes not easy to read literature and making one-page devotions, one for each day of the year, that is contemporary and easy to grasp. This is my favorite book to recommend to people to give them a taste of the great Puritan writers and their solid theology and shows them how these truths impact one’s daily life on a practical level. From this one book my husband and I added many, many more Banner of Truth volumes to our library, since we had been given a such a wonderful sampling of these writers from “Voices from the Past”. I would heartily encourage everyone to get a copy and read it each day.

Voices from the Past became part of our lives via Dr. William Downing of Morgan Hill CA. Arrived 1/21/12 now our daily devotional, pray & quiet time with Lord and Savior. It is also used as a journal too. We have gifted this book to family, many friends and used in prison ministry too. Thank you so much for pen this treasure.

I have had the “Voice from the Past” for over a year and now I am on my second journey through. It is a wonder compendium of Puritan pastors and their exposition of Christian doctrine. They seem to have a more thoughtful and complete understanding of God’s Word and especially the Gospel. They also didn’t have all of the distractions of modern life. More time to study and communion with God. I received my copy from the ministry of Truth for Life, Alistair Begg. Since then I have been investing in books by Thomas Watson, John Owen and others. It was a whole different world from the high paced and sometimes shallow experiences we have in the 21st century. Thank you Banner for providing these texts and teachings for us today.

I have been reading this daily, right before bed. I especially liked what
David Clarkson wrote. He wrote about Christ’s love and communion with Christ. I also like that it gives you the name of the author at the bottom. It is sturdy and I am very satisfied with this book. I would definitely recommend it.

Richard Rushing has done a great job of picking out choice meats from men that were the salt of the Earth. A good way to start the day along with your bible reading. You will find exhortation, encouragement and warning, Relevant today as it was when it was written for young or old, stirring the mind to godly thinking.

What a wonderful collection, the blessing it must have been for you to sift through all their great writings to come up with 365 convicting jewels. We cannot pick a favorite writer because they are all so good. Thank you for blessing Christendom with both volumes of the devotionals.
