‘This is a love story of the noblest kind. It is an enriching consideration of a woman’s relentless love for her Saviour, her Bible, her friends, and most uniquely, her love for lost, suffering and desperate sinners – to whom she gave her life. Such devotion as hers seems so distant. Reading this brief history will confront and help to close that distance.’ — JOHN MACARTHUR

‘Iain Murray has written a superb account of this remarkable woman’s life . . . He has read her books and her poetry, and what he writes reveals a keen understanding of the motives and undertakings of an extraordinary woman. It warmed my heart and informed my mind . . . I cannot too enthusiastically recommend this book.’ — IAN S. BARTER

‘Amy Carmichael receives a short but solid treatment from Iain Murray. I love the respect he has for her, even though she represents quite a different theological tradition.’ — TIM CHALLIES

I just finished reading Ian Murray’s little biography called “Amy Carmichael: Beauty for Ashes.” I really enjoyed reading this little gem for it exhibited Amy’s character as Christ- centered and Spirit- dependent. This is seen in her life through the love and care she gave to children in India. I really appreciated the love of Christ she had shown in the method in which she carried out her ministry. She did not compromise but taught scripture faithfully as she proclaimed the gospel to her little ones. She didn’t just know scripture but lived it out and sought that her children would know and learn scripture as well through memorization, recitation, and singing. You can see her heart not just in her service to children but also in her writings. I found this story to be so similar to so many women at my own church who I see constantly loving and serving so many covenant children. You need not go all the way to India in order to have the same impact that Amy did. The mission is the same in our churches, communities, and in the home. I heartily recommend this excellent little volume for it encourages us all to greater faithfulness in shining the light of Christ in the lives of others.

As one who has never read anything on Amy Carmichael, I found Iain Murray’s biography of her to be extremely stirring and helpful. Murray always draws practical application for the reader. You are never left unchallenged. Though Amy faced many trails, she maintained intimate fellowship with the God she loved. Amy once wrote, “I do not think there is anything from the beginning of our Christian life to the end, that is so keenly attacked as our quiet with God, for it is in quietness that we are fed.”

Though a small book, this book is well worth your time. Read it, then give it to others.
