Notes

Several reviewers have appreciated Sinclair Ferguson’s From the Mouth of God: Trusting, Reading, and Applying the Bible.

Derek J. Brown (San Jose, California) at The Gospel Coalition, says that ‘Ferguson’s book is a concise yet insightful resource that provides a reliable foundation on which to nurture faith in, love for, and obedience to God’s Word.’

Fred G. Zaspel (Franconia, Pennsylvania) on the Books at a Glance blog, commends it as ‘a rich combination of depth and warmth … a book for your entire congregation.’

Joey Parker (Florence, South Carolina) was ‘greatly blessed and highly encouraged by this book.’ He says on his blog that ‘Banner of Truth and Sinclair Ferguson have teamed up to provide the church with a most useful resource that is desperately needed today.’

Helen Dumont on her ‘Bookshelf’ at the Midwest Book Review Bookwatch, found it ‘an extraordinary and highly recommended instructional guide for all students of the Bible regardless of their denominational affiliation.’

Terry Delaney (Mexico, Missouri), has been reading the first volume of the recently reprinted 6-volume set of The Works of John Knox, and says on his Christian Book Notes blog that ‘the language barrier may be tough at first, but the reader would do well to scale that barrier and seek to understand Knox on his own terms rather than through the lens of a biographer.’

He also commends the Puritan Paperback Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices by Thomas Brooks here. ‘The value of this work is in its complete treatment of a subject that is rarely discussed.’

Arthur J. Fox (Middletown, Pennsylvania) found the new clothbound edition of Geerhardus Vos’ ‘classic’ Biblical Theology ‘a long read, but … worth the effort’, in his OPC review.

Joey Cochran (St Charles, Illinois), at the Lifeway Pastors Today blog, says that Charles Bridges’ The Christian Ministry ‘instils a deep affection for your calling and imprints zeal to animate God’s people towards holiness.’

He also finds The Works of Thomas Manton ‘a portfolio of clear, simple, and profound exposition’ here.

‘All Christians, but especially ministers and students of the gospel ministry, can profit by reading these volumes where the preaching of the gospel in demonstration of the Spirit and power is recorded’ says Dutchman Pieter de Vries of John Aaron’s translation of The Calvinistic Methodist Fathers of Wales by John Morgan Jones and William Morgan, in ‘Lessons from the Church History of Wales’ on his blog.
