Book Description

In Andrew Bonar’s biography of Asahel Nettleton (1783-1843), he writes of a man who was a leading figure in one of the most important half centuries in American Church history. From the late 1790s to the early 1840s a succession of revivals transformed the spiritual prospects of the nation, and in these, in the words of the New York Evangelist, ‘Nettleton served a glorious purpose. Few men, since the apostolic days, have been honoured with such signal success in preaching the word, and in the conversion of sinners’. The author, Dr. Bennet Tyler, who knew Nettleton from 1812, asserts that from that date, he was ’employed almost constantly in revivals for ten years’. As a counsellor to ministers his aid was constantly sought, particularly upon the subject of evangelism and revivals ‘on which he had an amount of experience and observation beyond any man living’. At a time when the nature of true revivals and of biblical evangelism is being widely re-assessed, the re-appearance of this volume, ably edited by M’Cheyne’s biographer, Andrew Bonar, is of major significance.

Asahel Nettleton’s shorter biography was the first book, apart from the Bible, that was given to me as a new believer. It had a massive impact upon how I evangelized. Now, ten years later, I’ve been able to read this volume which contains a fuller account of his labors and ministry. There is wisdom to be gained in observing how Nettleton dealt with awakened sinners. He knew the human heart and sought to destroy the excuses that sinners would give in order to excuse themselves from coming to Christ. I’m thankful this book is being kept in circulation by Banner of Truth.

I heard for years how Calvinist’s were such bad evangelists, yet the names George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, and Charles Spurgeon seemed to escape their emotional tirades. Yet, Charles Finney’s name came through with cheerful pride. One name escaped my mind, that was Asahel Nettleton. Being a historian, I should be ashamed. I thought I knew alot about the era of Charles Finney, yet I had never learned much about Nettleton until I came across this book. As I said, I should be ashamed (I am). The importance of knowing about this man and how he evangelized is priceless! He didn’t water down the Gospel, and thousands upon thousands were saved because of it. Nettleton was totally opposite of Finney, wherein Finney used man-made tricks to lure people in an Nettleton depended on God alone. We should learn from Asahel (and Spurgeon). Stay true to the Word and God will stay true to your ministry.
