Book Description

A selection of over 400 pastoral letters to his people at Gilcomston South Church of Scotland, Aberdeen, where the author ministered for more than fifty years. 1. Andrew Young

    William Still was the minister at Gilcomston South church, Aberdeen from 1945 until 1997, just a few months before his death. Early in his ministry he became convinced that one of the best ways to bring the message of the gospel to members and friends of the church was by a monthly pastoral letter. This book contains a selection of those letters.
    The book begins with a biographical introduction by Sinclair Ferguson. This gives us an insight into his upbringing in the North-East of Scotland, and some detail regarding his call to the ministry. There is then a brief description of congregational life at the church during the early 1980s.
    This biography is then followed by the letters – 48 in all – covering the period from 1946 to 1981. The letters express many of Still’s convictions and reveal the heart of the pastor. The early letters to the members help us to see how the church was changing from a formal, nominal church into a biblically based, evangelical one. Subjects which are then covered include the following:
    * the life of the church
    * prayer
    * the Word of God
    * the role of women in the church
    * the spiritual life
    * children in the church (5 letters)
    * the ministry
    * evangelism and outreach
    The letters are very clear and get straight to the heart of the different topics. The book will be helpful for Christians both young and old. I read this one in my youth and found that it helped to clarify some issues at the time. It will certainly make you sit up and think about the different matters. It will also be a great encouragement to those involved in the ministry. Recommended.
