‘If you’re the kind of person who has never read a book on church history, this should be your first one…It’s clear, it goes through everything, he picks up edifying accounts, it’s reliable.’ — MARK DEVER

Book Description

This book outlines the thrilling story of the onward march of the church of Christ from the earliest times to the end of the nineteenth century. It is not a dry-as-dust account of long-forgotten events and controversies, but rather a moving record of those who undertook the adventure of faith before us and through their courage and steadfastness, left an example for the church in every age.

Reading of the exploits of those who have gone before us, through times of prosperity and times of persecution, should stimulate, warn and encourage the church in our own age to persevere in the same path, and obtain the same everlasting reward.

I read this book a few years ago. I really like how accessible this sketch of church history is. Some people don’t like to just read, but see, what it was like, and this book gives you both. Just enough information, and with pictures and illustrations from the history of what God has done through the centuries in his church.

Excellent book! Helped us in Zambia to love History!

This is a great little book of church history. Mr Houghton writes in an engaging style and covers a lot of ground. I think it is really important for people to study church history in particular those in some parts of the Church of England. They would do well to realise the sacrifices that the Reformers made to ensure Biblical truth over the traditions of men. This is worth a read for anyone who wants to see the enduring power of Christ over the last 2000 years. The criticisms are minor but I would have liked more information on the early church and footnotes and references would have been helpful for further reading but I am glad this book now sits on my shelves. I have now moved on to Marcus Loane’s excellent “Masters of The Reformation” and “The Reformation in England” by Merle D’Aubigne as well as David Daniell and Brian Moynahan’s excellent biographies of Tyndale. Such a terrible shame this is not taught in schools anymore.
