John Newton (1725\u20131807), sailor, preacher and hymnwriter, was one of the most colourful figures in the great\u00a0Evangelical Revival of the 18th Century. \u2018Once an infidel and\u00a0libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa,\u2019 he wrote for his own epitaph,\u00a0\u2018by the rich mercy of Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and\u00a0appointed to preach the faith he had long laboured to destroy.\u2019<\/p>\n
