Notes

Paul Helm, at Reformation21, finds Calvin’s style ‘clear, confident, and unflinchingly dogmatic’ in Institutes of the Christian Religion.

Terry Delaney (Mexico, Missouri), on his Christian Book Notes blog, recommends The Christian’s Great Enemy: A Practial Exposition of 1 Peter 5:8-11, and finds that John Brown ‘is extremely pastoral and offers much encouragement to the Christian in what amounts to a daily, life long battle with the devil and his temptations.’

David Murray (Grand Rapids, Michigan) found ‘deep thought and beautiful writing … by an unfrazzled mind and a prayerful spirit’ in Sinclair Ferguson’s From the Mouth of God, according to his Head, Heart, Hand blog.

Greg Goswell (Sydney, Australia), in New Life (1 October 2014, pages 15-16) says that ‘the twin volumes of over 1300 pages [of Princeton and the Work of the Christian Ministry] show the balanced approach of the teachers of pre-1929 Princeton, and a thoughtful and prayerful reading of these volumes will also help us to regain and maintain our spiritual balance.’

Also at New Life (15 December 2014, page 16), Bob Thomas (Melbourne, Australia) gives Stuart Olyott ‘full marks’ for his Ministering Like the Master. ‘His writing is noteworthy for its freshness, originality and faithfulness.’
