Preached in Geneva from January to May 1650, John Calvin’s sermons on the book of Genesis, chapters 11-20, are here translated into English for the first time. In these sermons John Calvin speaks powerfully to the hearts and consciences of his hearers. Indeed, in them the reader will encounter the real Calvin, a passionate and skilful pastor who loved to offer the water of life to spiritually thirsty men and women.
Though we often think of Calvin as a theologian and an able commentator on the text of Scripture, it would be wrong to imagine that he preached as one who lived in an ivory tower. The Reformer of Geneva knew only too well the persistent struggles and battles of everyday life and he therefore preached as a pastor who cared deeply for his people. Hence, in these sermons on Genesis chapters 11-20 you will be exhorted to embrace the love of God and the grace of Jesus Christ offered in the gospel; here too you will be warned about the wiles of the devil, the temptations of the world, and the hidden snares of your own human nature. The aim of Calvin’s preaching was to nourish with the truths of Scripture God’s hungry pilgrim people, so that they might be strengthened to resist all the trials, tribulations, and temptations that would otherwise turn them away from the heavenly kingdom, the ultimate goal.
Calvin’s sermons are suitable for Christians at all levels of spiritual development. They were first preached to spiritually hungry people, not academics. While students may enjoy reading them, it will be spiritually hungry souls who will be most blessed by them.
