‘I am deeply thankful that God led me to Lloyd-Jones in 1968. He has been a constant reminder: you don’t have to be cool, hip, or clever to be powerful. In fact, the sacred annointing is simply in another world from those communication techniques. His is the world I want to live in when I step into the pulpit.’ — JOHN PIPER

‘No preacher had greater influence on me in my formative years than David Martyn Lloyd-Jones. It was his preaching which I absorbed in books, without ever hearing his voice, that brought together biblical exegesis, sound theology, insightful wisdom and pastoral care into one clear, well focused picture…This particular biography has had a profound influence on me for many years. Some books have a short non-shelf life. Not these two volumes.’ — JOHN MACARTHUR

‘Martyn Lloyd-Jones was one of God’s special gifts to the Church in the 20th century, and the longer time goes on, my admiration of him increases. He has a more profound spiritual vision than anyone else I know.’ — MARK DEVER

‘The most powerful and persuasive voice in Britain for some thirty years is now silent.’ — JOHN R. W. STOTT

‘The greatest man I have ever known.’ — JAMES I. PACKER

‘No one will ever understand my husband until they realise that he is first of all a man of prayer and then an evangelist.’ — BETHAN LLOYD-JONES

Book Description

This book is a re-cast, condensed and, in parts, re-written version of the author’s two volumes, D. Martyn Lloyd- Jones: The First Forty Years (1982) and The Fight of Faith (1990). Since those dates, the life of Dr Lloyd-Jones has been the subject of comment and assessment in many publications and these have been taken into account. The main purpose of this further biography, however, is to put Dr Lloyd-Jones’ life before another generation in more accessible form. The big story is all here.

When Lloyd-Jones left medicine, he intended only to be an evangelist in a mission hall in South Wales. No one was more surprised than he in being called to a ministry which would eventually affect churches across the world. How this happened is here explained, but the theme is the person described by F. F. Bruce: ‘a thoroughly humble man. He was a man of prayer, a powerful evangelist, an expository preacher of rare quality, in the fullest sense a servant of the Word of God.’

Behind that theme a greater one emerges. In Lloyd-Jones’ own words: ‘My whole life experiences are proof of the sovereignty of God and his direct interference in the lives of men. I cannot help believing what I believe. I would be a madman to believe anything else-the guiding hand of God! It is an astonishment to me.’

I first came into contact with Dr. Lloyd-Jones through REFNET, the ministry of Ligonier Ministries and was powerfully moved by his preaching. I was excited to learn that I was equally impressed by his character as presented here by Iain H. Murray. I’m not sure what I expected but I was surprised and filled with joy at the way the Gospel shines through this volume. Dr. Lloyd-Jones held the Gospel high, believed and preached its sufficiency to sustain the believer in every aspect of life and to powerfully call and convert the lost. I felt strengthened and reassured as I reflected on the challenges facing the church at this time to rest in the preaching and living of the Gospel in the face of our modern day darkness.

  2. Richard Jones

I first heard of Dr. ML-J when I picked up a small book called “Authority”, of which I was compeled to read more by this wonderful man. As I found more of his writings and listened to his commanding voice on audio, I wanted to know more, I wanted to know the man that God had placed on this earth to preach the Gospel. I found Banner of Truth Trust and have read many books from them. But this testimonial is to reflect not only the good Dr.’s great preaching but to edify Ian H. Murray and his wonderful book of the life of Dr. ML-J, this book not only gives a glimpse into the life of Dr. ML-J, but a look into the God that used this man to proclaim the Word of God. And God is using Mr. Murray to bring about the knowledge of great preachers to a new generation. Thank you Mr. Murray and God be pleased and bless you.

This was my first time reading about Llyod-Jones. I read his sermon on Isaiah before and it was a word in season. I read this entire book aloud each night to my family. When we finished we wept as if we lost our own friend. I cannot recommend this bio enough. If you have the time read Ian Muarry’s 2 vol but if not this is sufficient option well worth your prayerful reading.

  4. Wesley Adams

God gave me a wonderful gift in the life of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. As I read this book I found a friend that I had never met, a teacher I had never sat under, and an example of faith. When I realized I was about to read the final chapter, I put the book down. All books come to an end, but this was the story of a life. I put it off for as long as I could, and I am glad that I did. I was able to read of the victorious passing of Lloyd-Jones on a day when I had nothing else to do. I didn’t realize how affected I would be, but I should have known that there would be tears streaming down my face as even previous portions of this wonderful book guided me into tearful prayer. The rest of the day my thoughts were full of the God that made such a man.

The life of MLJ will encourage you to be a more courageous minister and a more faithful Christian. Some of the best bits of the book are the descriptions of warm Christian fellowship that was cultivated at MLJ’s first church, as well as the tales of pastoring during WWII in London. The last few chapters about the end of MLJ’s life brought me to tears as I considered how well this faithful man died in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  6. Rob MacGregor

Murray’s biography of Lloyd-Jones was my last read of 2019. I found the volumes both interesting and edifying. MLJ focused on a Christ-centered ministry rather than a crisis- centered ministry.

Many decades ago I owned the 2 volume set on Jones. Looked nice on my shelf. And there it mostly remained. But, I recently purchased the 1 volume based partly on a preachers repeated referencing of Jones.
I am now working thru it and felt that I could already give this am excellent review.
It is well written and covers just enough material to keep my interest and my enthusiasm at a fever pitch. It will end up on my shelf at a later date but not until I finish it!!

  8. Cutter Wiseman

This biography is one of the best that I’ve read in a long while. This is at the top of my list for book recommendations. This book has made me a life-long fan of the good Dr.

  9. John Grimaldi

I have fallen in love with the good Doctor. Wow! Just finished this biography while listening to MLJ’s preaching series from the book of Romans. I have been familiar with MLJ but this biography brought me sweet spiritual yearning for MORE. I shed tears of joy and conviction for our great God and a life well lived. I recommend this very highly
