‘What can be more profitable, next to the Bible itself, than to read something of the life of such a man as George Whitefield and to read his own words? The famous essay by Bishop Ryle is certainly the best short account of Whitefield that has ever been done, and it is good that it should be thus reprinted. At the same time this volume provides samples of the great preacher’s sermons. It is a judicious and representative selection.’ — D.M. LLOYD-JONES
Book Description
Whitefield was not only the greatest preacher and orator of the eighteenth century, he was also one of its most saintly characters, if not the saintliest of all. Certainly there was no more humble or lovable man amongst them. What can be more profitable, next to the Bible itself, than to read something of the life of such a man and to read his own words!

Dr. JL –
There are a few books that have changed me spiritually over the years (outside of the Bible). This book is one of those books! Dr. Lloyd Jones put it correctly when he said that the short biography by Bishop Ryle that is included, alone, is one of the most inspiring I have read! Then, to read a few of the surviving sermons of one of God’s greatest gospel preachers in the history of the church, is priceless. George Whitfield’s preaching was anointed, and these sermons contain that same unction. George Whitfield’s ministry had such a profound impact on the “Christian” west, as well as an untold influence on our founding fathers, the birth of our nation, and consequently, the world, that only heaven will reveal it! I wish every born-again believer in America would take the time to read this small book. The church in America, and our nation, would be changed forever. If the ministers in all the evangelical churches in America would read it, we might would have another “Awakening” that could shake the foundations of hell, change the church and spread the gospel to the ends of the earth in these last days.
Andrew Young –
Here we have a sample of six sermons from the eighteenth century preacher. If you read them a number of things concerning Whitefield will stand out. These include his passion for the gospel, love for his saviour, and his great longing for the salvation of others whatever their background. These were preached in the language of his day, but are still very readable today. They are full of simple truths which are clearly and directly explained.
Subjects covered include the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent from Genesis 3, a sermon on Enoch from Genesis 5:24 describing what it means to ‘walk with God,’ and a powerful gospel message from Jeremiah 23:6 – ‘The Lord our righteousness.’
This book gives us an insight into the preaching of George Whitefield. It also includes a summary of his life and doctrine, written by J.C. Ryle. A real treasure that is worth getting hold of.
