Theology that is ‘practical, applying Bible teaching with insight and wisdom to the condition of plain people. Christian beginners will get the benefit and the Lord’s older sheep, grown tough and stringy maybe, will find themselves edified and perhaps tenderised too’. — J.I. PACKER

Book Description

Christian doctrine matters for Christian living. This is ‘one of the most important growth points of the Christian life,’ writes Sinclair B. Ferguson. From this starting point, The Christian Life expounds such key biblical themes as grace, faith, repentance, new birth and assurance with clarity and contagious enthusiasm. ‘Christian doctrines are life-shaping,’ explains the author, because ‘they show us the God we worship.’

Widely used and appreciated since its first appearance, The Christian Life not only expounds the teaching of Scripture, but outlines its meaning for practical Christian living.

I grew up in Reformed and Presbyterian churches and was excited to learn more and more theology as I became an adult. My tendency was to learn theology for its own sake. I knew of Dr Ferguson’s reputation when I found a used IVP edition of this book, and it wonderfully connected this great theology with the life we’re called to live. It has become one of my favorite books.

There should be a class in every church based on this book. Need a study guide with an available online site where Dr.Ferguson and others share particular points in each chapter. A complete course, simple yet in depth.

Every recently converted Christian needs to be given this book to read. All the importance of foundational doctrines that new believers should be learning about are covered in this book.

This book is an excellent primer for Christians to begin studying basic theology. Ferguson touches upon most of the important doctrinal themes in an easy-to-understand, easy-to-follow approach. His perspective is definitely Reformed but the content would still be beneficial to all Protestants and evangelicals. My only complaint with this work is that there are no study questions provided. Had there been, I would have used it as a discussion guide for church training. If you’re looking for a Biblically-solid primer on Christian doctrine, I highly recommend it!
