‘I found these twenty-one sermons to be a tremendous example of gospel preaching. If you’re a preacher wanting to work on how to better preach the gospel from whatever text you might find yourself in, buy this book and study up.’ — JUSTIN BUZZARD

Book Description

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones is most often remembered as the preacher of Westminster Chapel, London. But his ministry began far from the metropolis, in the industrial setting of Aberavon, South Wales. It was during this time that the sermons in this book were preached, and they show that from the outset of his ministry, Dr. Lloyd-Jones was an evangelistic preacher.

Dr. Lloyd-Jones was filled with concern that no one should mistake, as he had done in his younger days, nominal Christianity for the real experience of salvation. The sermons reveal great insight into the plight of humanity, and a compassion for the unconverted. They are reproduced here as examples of what gospel preaching ought to be, and in the conviction that they will speak again to the hearts and consciences of new generations.

  1. Andrew Young

This book contains twenty-one sermons preached by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones during the early years of his ministry in Port Talbot, South Wales, from 1927-38. The book is an excellent example of evangelistic preaching, especially when in these days, such preaching seems so hard to find. Subjects covered include the parable of the prodigal son, the wide and the narrow gate, the healing of Jairus’ daughter, and repentance (a sadly neglected subject in many of today’s churches).
In each sermon Lloyd-Jones gets right to the heart of the matter. He deals with any false notions that people may have regarding the true Christian faith. He shows the hopeless situation that man finds himself in – a sinner, unable to make peace between himself and God by his own efforts. In fact, even the title of the first sermon in the book sums up this point. It is based on Mark 10:26-27 and is entitled ‘Christianity-Impossible with men.’
He then goes on to show that the only hope for mankind lies in God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ and His death on the Cross for sinners. Each sermon stands out as being thoroughly Christ-centred and is a lesson that preachers today would do well to heed to. However, he does not simply present the facts. In each sermon he challenges the reader to repent of their sin and submit to Christ: “Believe on Him tonight and give yourself to His keeping” (p116).
This is a book that is well worth having. Anyone involved with preaching today should study it carefully. Personally, I found that this and Dr Lloyd-Jones other book of evangelistic sermons from the Old Testament have helped me to sharpen up my own presentation of the Gospel message. Other Christians of all ages, should find it very helpful too.

As I read through the sermons from Aberavon the sense of thankfulness continued to swell up in me. At one moment I was wishfully wanting to have sat listening to Lloyd-Jones preaching first hand. Then, I was thankful these messages were secured for future generations to read, to ponder over, to consider. The Doctor’s devotion to God and loving concern for his audience is heart-melting.

Throughout his ministry Martyn LLoyd-Jones preached an evangelistic sermon every Sunday evening. The manuscripts he wrote for those sermons in the early years of his ministry are recorded here. There is an idea in modern evangelicalism that evangelistic preaching is only useful for those outside the church. I have known people who have asked me when we were talking about sermons on the gospel “is that it?” To them, evangelistic sermons were shallow and no more than a repetition of facts that anyone who grew up in church has heard since grade school. If you share this attitude, then I cannot encourage you enough to read these sermons. Why? Because they contain the remedy that is so painfully absent in what passes for “gospel” preaching these days. To say that Jesus loves sinners and quote John 3:16 is not preaching the gospel. Later in his life, LLoyd-Jones wrote both in his sermons on Romans 1:18 in the first volume of his series on Romans and his sermons on the beatitudes from Studies in the Sermon on the Mount that the first business of the gospel is to bring a man face to face with God. That is exactly what he does in these sermons. The theme may differ from sermon to sermon, but inevitably he will call on you to examine your position before God. One of the things he puts a particular emphasis on is the danger of being a false convert. In one sermon from the opening chapters of Luke he refers to the Magnificat and the Benedictus and notes that Mary and Zacharias were worshipping the Lord from the depths of their soul. He states that that is what the gospel inevitably leads to. It is not something on the periphery of someone’s life. No, it is something that touches the very depths of one’s soul and being. He then implores his congregation to examine if that is true of them, is there Christianity something that goes to the depths of their very being or is it something superficial? Preaching that reminds us of the true soul-searching gospel is a rare treasure these days. It is something every true Christian will find to be of value. So, if you are looking for a reminder of the depth and wonder of the gospel by which God has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light, I commend this volume to you.
