Book Description
In this classic work, J. Gresham Machen addresses one of the most fundamental questions about the Christian Gospel. In his graceful style he expounds the biblical teaching on faith, combining the solid content of the truth with the personal challenge of the gospel. The result is a book of outstanding and permanent value.
This book will soon be joined by these companion volumes by Machen:
- God Transcendent
- The Christian View of Man
The story of Machen’s life and work is told in J. Gresham Machen: A Biographical Memoir by Ned B. Stonehouse, which is also published by Banner of Truth.

Scobie –
This is a book every Christian should read… yearly. It changed my understanding of faith, as well as the role of the mind or intellect in our Christian life. It freed me from pervasive influences in our culture over the last couple of centuries, from theological liberalism, to mysticism, to anti-intellectual pietism, to the charismatic movement. By reconnecting me to my own faculty of reason and intellect, in accordance with genuine Biblical faith, I was able to grow in my use of my mind… which improved my study of the Bible, of theology, of practical pastoral issues, etc. It is a shame it has been out of print for so long. Banner of Truth, please reprint this as soon as possible. I buy extra copies to give to Christian friends, church libraries, etc. I need some now…
