‘To read the work of a Puritan doctor of the soul is to enter a rich world of spiritual theology to feed the mind, heart-searching analysis to probe the conscience, Christ-centred grace to transform the heart, and wise counsel to direct the life. This series of Pocket Puritans provides all this in miniature, but also in abundance.’– SINCLAIR B. FERGUSON

Book Description

Anger is God’s good gift to help us resist all that is wrong. But anger may itself be sinful. Richard Baxter gives valuable and practical advice on how to recognize and overcome this sinful anger in all its forms. Adapted and paraphrased from Richard Baxter’s Christian Directory by Richard Rushing.

The best treatment of anger I have ever read! These Pocket Puritans are great at getting stright to the heart of the matter. Baxter starts out by defining what anger is, explaining why it is a good gift of God when we use it rightly, and what sinful anger is. The rest of the book he deals with the sinful manifestations of anger and their ugliness, and gives practical motivations and strategies on how to overcome the temptation to misuse anger. You can read it in a single afternoon. I plan to reread my copy, and to share it with members of my church as often as possible! One last note — reading the Puritans can be intimidating, but this little volume is both short and quite readable. The editor did a terrific job at updating the language and examples to make it relevant and accessible to the modern reader.
