‘If I might read only one book beside the Bible, I would choose The Christian in Complete Armour.’ — JOHN NEWTON

‘Gurnall’s work is peerless and priceless; every line is full of wisdom; every sentence is suggestive. The whole book has been preached over scores of times, and is, in our judgment, the best thought-breeder in all our library.’ — C.H. SPURGEON

‘You will often find in a line and a half some great truth, put so concisely, and yet so fully, that you really marvel how so much thought could be got into so few words.’ — J.C. RYLE

Book Description

Gurnall’s Christian in Complete Armour, certainly one of the greatest of all the Puritan’s practical writings, has been many times republished, but the best edition remains that of 1864, with an Introduction by J.C. Ryle. It is this unabridged edition which is now reprinted.

This Complete Armour is beyond all others a preacher’s book: I should think that more discourses have been suggested by it than by any other uninspired volume. I have often resorted to it when my own fire has been burning low, and I have seldom failed to find a glowing coal upon Gurnall’s hearth. John Newton said that if he might read only one book beside the Bible, he would choose The Christian in Complete Armour, and Richard Cecil was of much the same opinion.

By far the best book in my library, other than my bible it is my go to book for lessons, encouragement, instruction. It took me so long to read it the first time as I would re-read a chapter 3-4 times before moving on.A wealth of Biblical insight.I highly recommend this book

  2. Rev. Jyoti Chakravartty

I remember reading this book in early 90’s while I was down with Hepatitis, Gurnall changed my life; my understanding of Christian faith. I strongly recommend this book, the three volume abridged version is quite understandable.

  3. Charles C.

Read about a third of this book in the 1980’s when I had first come to the truths of God’s sovereignty in salvation. It was a wonderful encouragement in a number of ways but I could never recommend any abridged or especially “modernized” version any more than I could a modernized interpretation of a Rembrandt. It was exqisite in form as much as content.

Perhaps the greatest book ever produced on the topic of spiritual warfare is The Christian in Complete Armour by William Gurnall. This book (unabridged version) is published by the Banner of Truth.

This unabridged version consists of two volumes that total well over 1,000 pages. This book is a compilation of Gurnall’s sermons and lectures on Ephesians 6:10-20. Have you recently read any books over 1,000 pages that were based upon 11 verses of Scripture? If not, it’s time for you to do so!

The content of this book is simply amazing! It is essentially a work about sanctification in the believer’s life. Gurnall encourages, warns, teaches, admonishes, helps, and instructs the believer in how to mortify (kill) sin and how to flee from the enemy and his attacks. Ephesians chapter 6 is largely about the spiritual armor that we are commanded to “put on”.

Volume one consists of a biographical sketch of Gurnall, written by J.C. Ryle prior to getting into the exposition of Ephesians 6. Gurnall is absolutely masterful in his exegesis and application of Ephesians 6 to the Christian life. The back cover quotes John Newton as saying “If I might read only one book beside the Bible, I would choose The Christian in Complete Armour.” This shows how significant Gurnall’s writing is! It is a true encouragement to the Christian’s soul.

    PROS:

-I enjoyed the one volume edition of Gurnall’s work.
-The book is beautiful, and the dust jacket is very nice.
-Though the English is not updated, I found it to be extremely readable.
-As mentioned above, the content is phenomenal! It couldn’t be improved upon.
-The intro by J.C. Ryle adds a very nice touch.
-The font is very nice, and the artwork is beautiful (found in the beginning of a new chapter, and the first letter of the word that begins a new section).

    CONS:

-I’m not a huge fan of the double column. I think a single column would have provided a nicer reading experience.

I highly recommend this book to every Christian! You will be deeply encouraged, and you will appreciate Gurnall’s work on how the Christian is to approach this life in the armor that the Lord provides to us.

A huge book full of deep spiritual wisdom that I am slowly working my way through each day. It has been listed as out of stock for several months on the site so I had to turn to the second hand market but I am glad that I did. I always feel that I am missing something with abridgements. Gurnell is not hard to understand in the original. I hope there is another print run of this book.

  6. Shirley

Im savoring this book day by day. It will take about a year to complete, but it’s filling my heart and mind with rich comfort during this troubling year if 2020.

Just reminding myself that God is in control and He has provided His armor for my well being gives me strength in times of trouble.

  7. Sam Beaulieu

This Banner edition of Christian in Complete Armour has girth, I like that it has the preface by J.C Ryle. It is constructed well and will last with much use. The old english is a learning curve but not hard for those who will slow down and think a bit more. The content is heavenly, training the heart and hands for heaven while here on earth, and sure to fortify the soul. It is rich, warm & experiential. You’ll find light and heat in these pages. By far the best Puritan treatment of the book of Ephesians.
