‘I have come to know him so well that I could choose him out from among a thousand divines if he were again to put on his portly form, and display among modern men that countenance wherein was a ‘great mixture of majesty and meekness.’ His works occupy twenty-two volumes in the Victorian reprint: a mighty mountain of sound theology. They mostly consist of sermons; but what sermons! They are not so sparkling as those of Henry Smith, nor so profound as those of Owen, nor so rhetorical as those of Howe, or so pithy as those of Watson, nor so fascinating as those of Brooks; and yet they are second to none of these. For solid, sensible instruction forcibly delivered they cannot be surpassed. Manton is not brilliant, but he is always clear; he is not oratorical, but he is powerful; he is not striking, but he is deep. There is not a poor discourse in the whole collection: he is evenly good, constantly excellent. Ministers who do not know Manton need not wonder if they are themselves unknown.’ — CHARLES SPURGEON

‘If ever there was an English divine who must be classed as a Puritan, that man is Manton… his works, like [Bunyan’s] Pilgrim’s Progress, deserve the attention of all true Christians…As an expositor of Scripture I regard Manton with unmingled admiration. Here, at any rate, he is facile princeps [easily first] among the divines of the Puritan school…In days like these, I am thankful that the publishers of Manton’s Works have boldly come forward to offer real literary gold to the reading public.’ — J.C. RYLE

Book Description

The Works of Thomas Manton (1620–1677) present us with an outstanding example of what was most characteristic in the ministry of the English Puritans: careful, solid, warm-hearted applicatory exposition of the Scriptures. The entire twenty-two volumes are composed of sermons — the legacy of a lifetime devoted to the patient and systematic teaching and application of God’s word. Like his younger contemporary, John Flavel, Manton’s Works are characterized by great pastoral concern and a balanced wisdom. He was, said William Bates in his funeral sermon, ‘endowed with an extraordinary knowledge in the Scriptures’ and this enabled him to exercise a sustained ministry of verse-by-verse preaching without losing the interest of his congregation.

This set is a facsimile of the James Nisbet & Co. edition of 1870.

I have had the use of this incredibly helpful set for over 40 years. Sadly most of mine were poor quality paperbacks. What really mattes is the content that searches, thrills and keeps coming back to prove the inestimable value of every page.
I especially love to have the index in vol. 22 that has been of great value on many occasions.
Just one precious quote: ‘This is the usual course of God’s providence to suffer his people to be reduced to great dangers and extremities that there is not a hair-breadth between them and ruin.’ vol.9 pg.96

  2. Todd Baucum

No pastor will want to miss Manton’s wisdom. My favorite quote which is found a few times in his works: “Discord in the church produces atheism in the world.” He preached with a soft heart and an iron spine!

I have been using the Complete Works of Thomas Manton since before I purchase my own set in about 1976. I have learned so much from Manton. I have learned how to meditate on Scripture, how to listen to a sermon, and how to pray. I have learned how to study and interpret the Word of God. I can not say enough good about this set of books. I am not a theologian. I never went to seminary. I am now a retired high school teacher who loves the Lord. All I can say is that after the complete set of the unabridged works of Matthew Henry, this should be the next set of books a person who loves the Lord should purchase. I can not imagine how a pastor could get along without this set. I have used Manton repeatedly as I have taught adult women’s Bible Studies over the years, and they have proven invaluable.

I recently received this set, purchased immediately when I saw the price tag! What a wonderful set! Most are sermon series based on exposition of Scripture passages. As always with Banner books, these volumes are of HIGHEST quality. Highly recommended!

Get this while still on sale. Worth the price for content and quality. Thanks Banner!

  6. Jeff Pike

I was able to get this amazing set shipped to Canada and I am so grateful! As a Pastor, I know these books will be a constant source of encouragement in my personal life and ministry. Manton speaks simply, clearly and yet so profoundly.

Please, do yourself a favor and have this set in your library. You’re well be blessed by them again and again.

  7. Erek

I am on the first volume so far and I am blown away at the richness of Manton’s writings! It is such a treat to come home and delve into this material, secondary to Scripture of course, knowing that I will use these very well thought out sermons/writings in ministering to others as well as apply these applications to myself!

As an aside, BoT’s material is second to none! The quality of these volumes is bound to last a lifetime and more! This quality of resource and material, I believe, is made for multiple generations! So get to work, learn and then gift this to those you are Providentially designed to prepare and nurture in the ways of Christ!

I had previously purchased all the Thomas Manton volumes available by Banner of Truth. I knew that originally there was a set of 22 volumes printed, but was never able to find them, anywhere!Thomas Manton is my favorite Puritan. So when I learned that Banner were going to reprint the 22 volumes, I was beside myself. I’ve purchased the set and have started volume 1 and God willing aim to work my way through the 22 volumes. Each sermon Manton delivers a lorry load of truth, wrapped up in warm sentiments. I now get up a bit earlier in the morning to have a sermon before going out. Thank you for reprinting these, you’ve made me very happy.
