‘The best work on the Proverbs. The Scriptural method of exposition so well carried out by Bridges renders all his writings very suggestive to ministers. While explaining the passage in hand, he sets other portions of the word in new lights.’ — C. H. SPURGEON

Book Description

The Book of Proverbs, in Bridges’ view, ‘is not generally estimated at its just value’. The author of The Christian Ministry does not favour a purely technical study of the text, but gives a homiletical and practical treatment. ‘The best work on the Proverbs’, was C.H. Spurgeon’s verdict on this commentary. ‘Whilst explaining the passage in hand, he sets other portions of the word in new lights’.

Charles Bridges (1794-1869) was one of the leaders of Evangelical party in the Church of England in the last century. He was the vicar of Old Newton, Suffolk, from 1823 to 1849, and later of Weymouth and Hinton Martell in Dorset. Although The Christian Ministry is Bridges’ best known literary work, his expositions which included Ecclesiastes and Psalm 119 as well as Proverbs, are highly valued.

I have for many years read the proverb-for-the-day with Charles Bridges work open nearby. Although dead, “he still speaks” to the true heart and need of men. He has been one of my greatest spiritual teachers…I look forward to meeting him in glory. I continue to buy copies of this commentary and give them to my friends.

  2. David J. Harris

This is the premier commentary on the Proverbs. Bridges’ notes are deeply intelligent, yet highly readable. This is the first place I go to when I encounter a difficulty in reading through this Book, and it never disappoints. If you are thinking about teaching/preaching through Proverbs, this will not be the only commentary you want, but it should be your first purchase. Thank you Banner for selecting such a great work for this part of the Geneva series.

  3. Robert Goodnough

A slow, thoughtful perusal of this book will show you why the Holy Spirit raises up teachers of the word. Bridges drives the reader deeper and deeper into the scriptures (if you look up the passages he directs you to) and opens up Proverbs in a way that makes the reader stand in awe of our gracious God and His wisdom. If you are searching for a commentary on the book of Proverbs this is a perfect first choice.
