Book Description

Many who are conscious that their spiritual experience and vitality have sadly declined have only a hazy notion of the nature and causes of their condition. The kind of searching analysis which would help to clarify their thoughts and concentrate their sense of conviction is largely absent from the contemporary pulpit and from the Christian literature of the day.

But such help is available, and can be found in works like Octavius Winslow’s Personal Declension and Revival. It discusses the areas of life in which backsliding takes place, examines the consequences, and in the concluding chapters points to the Lord who is the restorer and keeper of his people.

The passage of time since this book was first published in 1841 has not diminished its value, and the fact that it has been frequently reprinted eloquently testifies to its continuing spiritual usefulness.

I’m not out of the first chapter yet, but…If you find yourself in a season where your heart seems hardened, distant from God, and you do not understand what happened, this book is for you.

I have been going through a season of coldness of heart and weakness in desire. While I was serving at a summer camp this year I saw this book on the shelf and began to read. This man knew my heart completely and diagnosed it exactly. One the of the most heart searching books I’ve ever read. In the end I have come to see clearly why and how far I have drifted from the Lord. Thankful for this book and for the mercy of Christ.

This is not a book to read. This is a book to meditate upon and to wrestle with. I break each chapter into multiple sections, allotting time for my heart and the Holy Spirit to convict on each point. Winslow is a masterful communicator and an articulate conduit for the convicting work of the Holy Spirit. Having owned the book for over 3 years, I still grapple with each scene of pure devotion that emerges page after page. I have also used this book to teach Sunday school for the last year and a half and we still in chapter 2! There is so much content here which not only arms us to fight against deadly declension and decline. But more importantly, Winslow provides at each turn an arsenal of palliative tools for empowering personal revival on a daily basis.
