‘I shall never cease to be grateful to. . .Richard Sibbes who was balm to my soul at a period in my life when I was overworked and badly overtired, and therefore subject in an unusual manner to the onslaughts of the devil. I found at that time that Richard Sibbes, who was known in London in the early seventeenth century as “The Heavenly Doctor Sibbes” was an unfailing remedy. . . The Bruised Reed. . . quietened, soothed, comforted, encouraged and healed me.’ — D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Book Description

Richard Sibbes (1577-1635), one of the most influential figures in the Puritan movement during the earlier years of the seventeenth century, was renowned for the rich quality of his ministry. The Bruised Reed shows why he was known among his contemporaries as ‘the sweet dropper’.

The Bruised Reed is now issued for the first time in a smaller format in the Puritan Paperbacks series. Some of the language and punctuation have been modernized to make the work more accessible.

This book opened my eyes to the rich and glorious truth found in Isaiah 42:3 – “…a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench …”

Yes, JESUS alone is our COMFORTER! He will tenderly and carefully care for us even in the depths of the bruises, pain, and exhaustion we suffer as a result of our own sin and the sin of the world.

With great care and intentional words, Sibbes expounds on how God comforts his elect and brings them closer to Himself through various trials.

This book is an excellent resource for all the saints!

Such a wonderful book. It will be an encouragement to any who read it.

This book was given to my by a friend and helped me very much after recovering from a long period of being lost in my life. After God graciously took me back, I had to work through a lot of fear concerning assurance of salvation and forgiveness of, past sins whilst recovering from trauma . My spirit was wounded and this book offers so much spiritual healing and guidance, it´s like a balm for a bruised soul. Not just this book but many others from the Banner seem to me to offer this kind of spiritual help at a very deep level, something which is urgently needed in today´s world. Thank you for all you do. Blessings, Helene Felter

The Bruised Reed is for those of us who are sick and need a doctors touch. Sibbes shows us that this desperate weakness of ours is exactly the kind of burden and need the Lord desires to heal and lift from us.
Full of gospel declarations, Spirit filled encouragement, and revelations of the Word that will make you see Christ more fully, this book will help you understand how someone can glory in their weakness and wounds; because Christ will not break the bruised reed. The Author and Perfecter will always finish what He starts.

My favorite Puritan work to date. Richard Sibbes exposits every drop of meaning this verse has for the believer. It is comforting and reassuring, a message that many of us Christians need to remind ourselves of, in fact, we need it daily. Though we are as bruised reeds, Christ will not break us. Though we are a smoking flax or “faintly burning wick” (ESV), He will keep that flame burning in us and preserve us till the end. What a message to be heard.
