Book Description

Thomas Watson was one of the most popular preachers in London during the Puritan era. His writings are marked with clarity, raciness and spiritual richness. Nowhere is this seen so clearly as in his outstandingly helpful exposition of the Shorter Catechism drawn up by the Westminster Assembly. The three-volume edition (of which this is the third) makes an ideal guide to Christian doctrine and practice and also serves as a wonderful introduction to Puritan literature.

In The Lord’s Prayer Watson analyzes in detail the Preface to the prayer and the six petitions which it contains. His treatment of the words ‘thy kingdom come’ is exceptionally full, illuminating and stirring. Like all great books on prayer it provides practical help because it concentrates on biblical instruction.

Watson was my introduction to the puritans. He is still my favorite. His writing on the Lord’s Prayer is pure gold. I’m in awe of the glories of truth and of the Triune God at every turn of the page. It is a holy fire at which one can safely warm one’s heart.

Thomas Watson was my introduction to the puritans. The first puritan book I read was his work doctrine of repentance. He is my favorite puritan. God used him to teach me what biblical repentance really was. Every time I read him I experience the rescue of God. Providentially, I started a sermon series on the Lord’s prayer and had his book to help me. I had been going through a season of depression and lethargy, I opened up his book on the Lord’s Prayer and God melted my heart and restored me by the beauty of the truth of how He is the BEST Father. All I could see was my sin, but after reading this, all I can see is the glory, kindness, and goodness of my heavenly Father, who loves me with incomparable love. I highly recommend this work, you’ll marvel and rejoice at every truth Watson draws out.
