‘Hodge’s method and matter make him doubly useful in commenting. He is singularly clear, and a great promoter of thought.’ — C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

Charles Hodge, who for fifty-six years from 1822 to 1878 — lectured on the Pauline Epistles at Princeton Theological Seminary, issued the final version of his Commentary on Romans in 1864. It was at once recognized as belonging to the number of the few truly great works on this Epistle and that verdict has been upheld by Christian leaders down to the present day.

I cannot praise this commentary too highly. I bought it as a teenager back in 1980 and though I initially found it difficult and demanding realised over the years that it is by far the best theological, devotional, scholarly and pastoral volume on Romans bar none. The book has an extraordinary lucidity which brings into sharp relief all the key elements of Paul’s great doctrines in the Epistle to the Romans. I can think of no other commentary which is so fulsome, dense, linguistically challenging (i.e. Greek & Hebrew grammatical discussion), thought provoking, but which at the same time sets one’s heart ablaze with passion and reverence for the Lord. Do not miss out on this volume.
