This week’s special is composed of Thomas Watson’s The Beatitudes: An Exposition of Matthew 5:1–10 and John Calvin’s Sermons on the Beatitudes, which are drawn from his ‘Gospel Harmony’ series, preached at the end of his ministry in Geneva.

Watson opens up such themes as meekness, mourning, persecution, and the beatific vision of God, from the famous words of Jesus on true blessedness. What announces itself as an exposition of Matthew 5:1-10 turns out to be a digest of all the central Puritan teaching on the Christian life. Sermons on the Beatitudes

This volume presents readers with a short series of sermons on the Beatitudes, translated for the first time into English by Robert White. They comprise Calvin’s exposition of Matthew 5:1-12, Mark 3:13-19 and Luke 6:12-26. In them, Calvin deals with our attitude to the poor, with meekness and mercy, and with the recompense of those rejected by others for righteousness’ sake. (128 pages, RP £9.00).
